ccording to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and CBS News, a seven-car pile-up in Clayton County, Georgia, resulted in six arrests by police, all related to driving under the influence. The Georgia traffic accident took place when a pedestrian attempted to cross I-75 at about 3 a.m. on Friday, July 5, 2013, and was struck by a vehicle. That collision led to a chain-reaction crash involving six other vehicles.
The pedestrian, who was charged with illegally being in the roadway, was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. One of the drivers was also taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Five of the other drivers were arrested for DUI and taken to jail. It is unclear if all or some of the drivers were from the same place or related in some way.
The car accident, which remains under investigation, slowed traffic on I-75 for several hours but was cleared by 9 a.m. on Saturday morning.
Sadly, far too many drunk drivers are on the road in the early-morning weekend hours. As you can see from the above story, these intoxicated drivers not only cause accidents but can also create chain-reaction accidents. Drinking and driving slows reaction times, making it more difficult for drivers to avoid hazards in the road.
